Making art is a natural expressive process in early childhood. Unfortunately, later insecurities dominate with the fear of not being able to draw.

Why does this happen?

Sometime between 8-10 years old children begin trying to make replicas of what they see in life only to be disappointed with the results. Frustration replaces the fun and freedom they once had- but in reality learning to draw is much like playing an instrument.  No one sits down and instantly plays a song before first learning the scales.  Learning to see with the tools learned and practice of basic elements of design and color are the scales for future success as an artist!

Giotto was the first in a movement of painters who turned flat iconic images into three dimensional forms by using values from light to dark.  Students will do two self portraits- the first in the iconographic style of the Middle Ages and the second using the perceptive use of light to create volume in the style early Renaissance.
