Week 1 / June 6-10 / 9am-12pm/ Ages 6-12: Fabric Dying Techniques
During this week we will learn several different ways to dye all kinds of fabrics. Each day we will learn a new technique, letting the fabric soak overnight giving us a new gift to unfold and rinse out each day before starting a new dye project. At the end of this camp, your child will have 5 different pieces of textiles to keep. Techniques that will be taught include: Shibori Itajime Indigo Dying, Ice Dying, Wax Batik, Rust Dying, Sun Printing and Eco Printing.
Week 2 / June 13-17 / 9am-12pm/ Ages 6-12: Fabric Surface Design Techniques
As we come back to our previously dyed fabric collection from last week, students will learn some elements of design and pattern making through various surface design techniques. We will learn how to carve blocks for printing, use found materials for printing, learn some basic hand stitching as well as painting and drawing onto our dyed fabrics. At the end of the week your child will bring home a finished wall hanging piece telling a story through all the different ways we have learned how to manipulate and develop fabric together. (This camp will serve as a continuation from the previous week of fabric dying but can also stand on its own if you are unable to take week 1 camp.)
Week 3 / July 11-15 / 9am-12pm / Ages 8-16 : Paper and Book Making
This week we will learn how to make paper from natural pulp. We will then learn ways to dye, paint, print and make amazing books out of each page we create. Understanding the process of making materials is so vital to appreciating the world around us providing a full circle learning moment for students. This camp will have a high emphasis on the history of ancient book making techniques while introducing the world of endless possibilities storytelling offers us through generations of art. At the end of camp, students will come home with a handmade book made of their own paper full of their own stories!
Week 4 / July 18-22 / 9am-12pm / Ages 10-16: Hand Dyed Abstract Quilting
Let’s dye some fabric and make it into quilts! Here we will learn several fabric dying techniques that we will then cut, sew and piece together making small quilts of our own as well as making a patch for the class project quilt. Based on the Quilters of Gee’s Bend, this class will teach us how to communicate through the cloth using texture, color, shape and design. Teaching the sacred act of quilting in a circle while sharing pieces of ourselves through craft is a lesson that stays with the soul forever.
